Karin and I have been trying to get together for some time and it finally happened. She arrived on Thursday and had to go back home on Tuesday. Such a nice relaxing time. My guys were away at a race so it was just us girls with Fergus who was standing security at the studio!
Kari teaches a class called "Animal Crackles" and I have been wanting to learn from her for a few years now. So, I printed out a few images and we set to work on Saturday. Of course, the day before we had to do a bit of retail therapy in shops to get the proper inspiration for working.
I chose a photo of my son, Joe, holding one of the Jack Russell terriers that lives behind us. Buddy is a favorite because of his patient and gentle attitude.
It was a bit daunting to think about doing the piece with my son in it as well. I tend to shy away from painting people. Oh well, in for a penny in for a pound as the saying goes. So after making a pattern on deli paper and cutting patterned paper pieces to use in the under-lying layers of the piece, I dove in. After gluing down and painting and marking and glazing and painting some more, I was done. The crackle glaze and then antiquing cream was applied and then left it to dry.
It is a fun process and one I will try again. We are making plans for Kari to come back to the area to teach this in a class so that others can learn, but I would advise starting with a simpler subject! :)
I know you two had a great time. It looks like an interesting technique.
